South African Salutations! The weather is beginning to warm here as we head to summer. We are enjoying God's blessing and are thankful that He is answering your prayers on our behalf. Allow me to relate some of the happenings here:
Embo Church Plant: During the month of September, the Pastor preached in the morning service and I taught Sunday School which meets just after the morning service. One Sunday I was teaching the children about the Ten Commandments. To do that, I had one child remember one commandment. Beginning with the first child, I had them stand in front and recite the commandment that they represented. We began and so on until we got to ten. After they were able to successfully recite the commandments, I tested them to see if they grasped the seriousness of violating God's law. I posed the question "what happens when you break one of the Ten Commandments?" A little boy, perhaps four to five years old, was eager to display his knowledge. He stood right up out of his chair and shot his arm in the air. He stood there, his eyes gleaming and conveyed his anxiousness. A double row of teeth were exposed by his broad toothy smile. As he impatiently waited, his countenance pleaded for recognition. Since I did not call on him right away, he stretched ever higher, his little fingers tickling into thin air as if playing a complex piano concerto. He arched his back to extend his reach even further. In doing so, his rotund belly protruded noticeably and his too small shirt also rose exposing half of his abdomen. Finally, I called on him to answer the question "what happens when you break one of the Ten Commandments?" As he gleefully dropped his arm, he blurted out with great joy "you have nine left!" So much for any urbane teaching technique.
Durban North Church Plant: We continue to meet in a vacant flat (apartment) for Lord's Day mornings. Our folks are faithful and very desirous to hear the Word. Last prayer update, I asked you to pray for a new family that had come once or twice. The Lord has drawn this dear family and they so much hunger and thirst for the straight teaching of God's Word and the fellowship of God's people. They seem to be growing by leaps and bounds. They are faithful to every meeting at the church and are hungry for more. The Lord is also using their enthusiasm to refresh us! There has been another visitor at the church for the last three weeks. She will not allow us to visit her in her home because her husband is not at all open to spiritual matters. He is an unsaved and apparently antagonistic to the Gospel. It is evident that the Lord is adding the increase, and that Satan is adding the opposition. We begin our prayer meeting this Tuesday. We will start with thirty minutes of prayer - no singing or even devotional, just prayer (our Bible study meets on Wednesday night). This must be the backbone of our ministry. I want our folks to have the heart of George Muller when he said that his prayer "might be instrumental in strengthening the faith of the children of God, besides being a testimony to the consciences of the unconverted, of the reality of the things of God" (Mueller, George, "Answers to Prayer" Moody Press, Chicago, p.10).
Praises:
--Two men saved in the Embo ministry and three others coming for Baptism.
--Bheki Nzama - Pastor Bheki is beginning to take up the leadership in the church in a very public way. He has done all of the Sunday morning preaching as well as oversee the sugar cane ministry by himself.
Prayer Requests:
--Pray for the women who has been visiting the last several weeks. Her husband is very antagonistic. Pray for her faithfulness and his salvation.
--Prayer metting - we begin tomorrow night. Pray for faithfulness to this meeting. This must be the backbone of our ministry.
--Meeting place - we are still looking for a better meeting venue. We currently meet in various homes, which is ok, but a few weeks ago we did not have enough room in the Bible study home to fit the people (we only had about 18 people, but it was a small sitting room).
--Salvation of those lost who have visited in the last 3 months - we have been following up on them.
--The men's discipleship which meets on Saturday in Embo.
Personal Prayer Requests:
--Our personal devotion to the Lord - Please pray that we would stay connected to the vine above all else.
--Zulu instruction - I am taking Zulu instruction. Please pray for the daily dedication necessary to get a grasp on this language.
--Home schooling - pray for Beth as she schools and disciples the children.
